In a live video on 05.09.22 hosted by Andrius Unikas the Head of operational Marketing Project Management of Teltonika Networks presented the future with 5G and how they are participating in this future with their new devices.

Prospects of 5G

First Graziano Ponzo the IoT Solutions Strategic Product Manager at Ericsson explains the prospects of 5G. He highlights that it is a real game changer in mobile broadband communication.

Speed With data traffic nowadays increasing by about 60% per year, making Internet access very crowded for all connected devices, this new technology enables higher network speed, faster data throughput and higher capacity.

Comparison: With up to 10 Gbit/s, it is 10x faster than 4G.

LatencyReduced latency enables real-time use cases such as autonomous vehicles, drones, AI, IoT and robotics.

Comparison: The average latency for 4G is 40 milliseconds and 1-10 milliseconds for 5G.

Power consumption In addition, 5G means energy efficiency. Through a series of improvements, it consumes less energy.

5G has so much processing power that it becomes more than a network due to the built-in power processor. The network can act as a distributed data center that also performs processing tasks. This means that intense processing tasks could be handled by the network instead of the device processor.

This improves the performance and battery of the device.

All in one, new possibilities are created.

It can act as many different networks at once. Each serving different kind of devices and solutions, which is called Network slicing. Slices of the network can be tailored for a specific purpose and act as their own independent network. This allows each slice to optimize the 5G features required for a particular service without wasting resources on things that are not needed.

For example, a slice could provide specialized services for devices with high data transfer requirements, such as industrial routers.

With a higher frequency range, power management systems and algorithms for compressing data packets, 5G and the corresponding devices will save energy and power!

Sales potential

The Head of Sales of Teltonika Networks cellular device division Mindangas Navickas explains the key drivers for the 5G market growth.

  1. Speed: important where a lot of bandwidth is required
  2. Latency: important in critical infrastructure
  3. Future-proofing: min. lifespan of an IoT solution is 5-10 years

The first two – speed and latency, are no-brainers because they are the most prominent features of 5G. Importantly, they will reduce the costs of solutions by requiring fewer devices to be installed and open the doors for markets where ultra-fast data throughput is vital, like critical infrastructure and autonomous vehicles.

The third and biggest driver is the future-proofing of solutions. Investing in 5G devices is the smartest move long-term, as the technology will soon establish its dominance and business shouldn’t repeat their mistake of relying too much on 3G, which ended up costing them immense sums when 4G took over and entire fleets had to be replaced quickly.

Overall the 5G is superior to 4G and is not so expensive either. Also, it will enable new use cases.
