Robust technology in a small housing

The RUT241 is an industrial-grade LTE router with Cat 4 support that enables mobile data connections with download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and uploads of up to 50 Mbps. Thanks to its compact design (83 x 74 x 25 mm) and robust aluminum housing, it is ideal for use in harsh environments such as distribution boxes, machine parks or mobile applications.

It has two Ethernet ports (1× WAN/LAN, 1× LAN), an integrated WLAN module (802.11n, up to 100 m range in free field) and two antenna connections each for LTE and Wi-Fi. RutOS: Versatility through OpenWrt

At the heart of the RUT241 is the RutOS developed by Teltonika, which is based on OpenWrt. This combination offers a stable firmware with numerous functions for network management, security and automation. Supported features include:

  • VPN protocols such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec, L2TP/PPTP
  • Firewall with DoS protection, port filtering and IP blocking
  • Routing functions incl. failover, load balancing and VLAN
  • Remote management via Teltonika’s own RMS (Remote Management System)
  • Protocols such as Modbus, MQTT, SNMP, SMS trigger, SSH and JSON-RPC

Thanks to the open architecture, the range of functions can be easily extended – for example with your own scripts or additional packages from the OpenWrt community.

Application example: Remote monitoring of a photovoltaic system

A typical scenario in which the RUT241 shows its strengths is the remote monitoring of a photovoltaic system on a remote company site without a fixed Internet connection.

Requirements:

  • Stable LTE connection for remote access to inverters and data systems
  • VPN tunnel for secure communication with the company headquarters
  • Remote maintenance and readout of operating data
  • Integration into existing dashboard via MQTT

Implementation:

The RUT241 is installed in a weather-protected technical cabinet and connected to the internet via LTE. Thanks to RMS, the network status and signal quality can be checked regularly – alerts in the event of failures are sent by email or text message.

OpenVPN is used to establish an encrypted tunnel to the IT center, through which technicians can access the web interfaces of the inverters. At the same time, the router transmits performance and error data to a central monitoring system via MQTT. If the connection becomes unstable, the automatic restart function (ping reboot) is used to restart the router and restore connectivity.
